Qu 7: Skills Development

When I reflect on my progress from the start of this project I realise how far I have come. In the preliminary task I was enjoying learning Photoshop and I didn't take the whole design element too seriously. This was partly because I was making a magazine design for the college and I wanted to break with conventions but also it was because my skills in using Photoshop and my knowledge of how a page should be laid out were pretty poor.

Through the coursework I because much more observant of magazine designs and I really took an interest in how colours, shapes, graphics and fonts combine for visual success. I was also interested in how some magazines were able to attract you to their pages whereas others didn't.

As a result of my observations and my improved skills, I think there was a vast improvement between my preliminary cover and my final one. For example, on my preliminary cover the model has his eyes closed. At the time I thought this was pretty radical but now I realise it just doesn't work. The colours and shapes were experimental and they didn't really work either. My final piece features a more complimentary colour scheme and the mode is far more engaging.

The language for the cover lines improved a lot too. I like magazines that take a really personal approach and I worked hard to get that feeling with my final magazine pages.
